What Kind Of Story Is「Momotaro 桃太郎」?
The story of Momotaro can be varied depending on the place. However, from now, we would like to tell you the most common story of this famous tale.
Once upon a time, in a land far away, there lived an old woman and an old man. While the old woman was doing her laundry in the river, she saw a gigantic peach flowing in the river. The old woman brought the gigantic peach to her home.
The old woman and old man cut the peach to eat it. At that moment, however, a boy came out of the peach. The old man and woman named the boy Momotaro and took great care of him.
When Momotaro grew up, he learned about the demons that are bullying the people. Momotaro decided to leave home to exterminate these demons.
While on his way to defeating the demons, he gave the Millet Dumplings he got from his grandmother and gave it to the dog, monkey and pheasant. Then, they became his servant.
When Momotaro and his friends arrived in the island of demons, they gave them a surprise attack during their feast.
Momotaro won the fight and brought back home the treasures that the demons stole from the people and they all lived happily ever after.
The Origin of「Momotaro 桃太郎」
Momotaro was said to originate in the Muromachi Period. The model image of Momotaro was a person named 「吉備津彦命(Kibitsuhiko No Mikoto)」in the Kojiki. During the Edo Period, the storyline of the tale became more certain and it spread to the people in the year 1688～1703.
However, this origin of Momotaro is said to be a theory. As a matter of fact, it is still a mystery who made this story and where it came from.
Why is Okayama Prefecture Famous For Momotaro?
Okayama Prefecture is very famous for Momotaro because of some similarities. We will now list the reasons why below.
